The short answer

As of July 2026, OpenAI reports more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users. In BrightLocal’s US research, 45% of consumers said they had used AI for a local-business recommendation in the previous year, while a separate recent-search survey found 8% started with AI and 23% used AI somewhere in the journey. AI is an additional discovery channel; it has not replaced Google.

Adoption: how many people actually use AI search

  • OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users on 27 February 2026.
  • In BrightLocal’s survey of 1,227 US consumers who had recently searched for a local business, 8% started with an AI tool and 23% used AI somewhere in that search journey.
  • A separate BrightLocal survey of 1,002 US adults found that45% had used AI for a local-business recommendation during the previous year. The time windows and questions differ, so the 45%, 23% and 8% figures should not be treated as one funnel.

AI adds a channel; it does not replace Google

  • 52% started their latest local-business search on Google Search, another 9% started on Google Maps, and 71% used Google Search at some point in the journey (BrightLocal, n=1,227).
  • 75% used more than one channel during that recent search. The practical strategy is strong website and Google fundamentals plus accurate, corroborated information wherever customers and answer systems check it.

Local business discovery: the numbers that matter for SMBs

  • 45% of consumers used AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to find local businesses in the past year — up from just 6% in 2025 (BrightLocal, survey of 1,002 US consumers).
  • That makes AI the third most-used discovery channel for local businesses, behind only Google and Facebook — already ahead of Yelp and TripAdvisor (BrightLocal).
  • Adoption peaks with 30–44 year olds at 64% — prime working-age consumers, though this remains US survey data and should not be generalized to every country or sector (BrightLocal).
  • Among respondents who had used AI for local recommendations,88% checked a cited review’s legitimacy or source and 97% said they at least sometimes double-checked AI recommendations against real reviews. Visibility and verification work together.

Which AI assistants people use

  • In BrightLocal’s local-recommendation survey, 31% had used ChatGPT for a business recommendation in the previous year; Google AI Mode followed at 23%. Those are respondent-use figures, not global market share.
  • Practical takeaway: test the systems your actual customers use, while keeping Google, website quality and third-party reputation work at the center of the plan.

Our own data: what we’ve measured at Surfaceddd

Internal observations from our own client work in 2026. This is a small, non-random sample, has not been independently audited and should not be treated as a benchmark or prediction. We’ll update the methodology and results as the dataset grows.

  • 45 local businesses audited in our internal 2026 tally. Most were rarely or never named by AI assistants for the questions their customers actually ask, typically failing three or more basics (schema, listing consistency, question-shaped content).
  • 3 businesses taken through full implementation so far. The best observed post-implementation visibility rate was 87%. That is the maximum result in a sample of n=3, not the average, a typical outcome or a guarantee. This observational result does not by itself prove that our work caused the change.

How we measure: for each business we fix a set of local-intent questions (the queries its customers would ask), put them to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on a schedule, and record whether the business is named. Visibility = the percentage of tracked queries where the business appears. Results can vary with model version, date, account, location and answer mode. Small sample, disclosed as such — n=3 implementations at time of writing. The underlying prompt-level logs are not published on this page, so treat the 87% result as an internal, directional observation rather than independently reproducible evidence.

What the numbers mean for a local business

  • In the cited BrightLocal survey of US consumers, reported local-business discovery through AI rose from 6% to 45% year over year. That survey does not establish the same adoption level in every country or industry.
  • AI answers can shape a shortlist before someone visits a website. Clear first-party facts and corroborating third-party sources make the business easier to verify: here’s exactly how.
  • Reviews help people evaluate a business and may also provide corroborating information to search and answer systems. They do not guarantee a recommendation.
