How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Updated 10 July 2026 · by

The short answer

Make your business easy for AI to verify: structured data (schema) on your website, an identical name, address and phone number across your listings, genuine reviews, pages that answer real customer questions in plain language, and no blocked AI crawlers. ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find and cross-check across the sources it reads — become one of them and you become recommendable.

How ChatGPT actually picks businesses

Two paths lead into a ChatGPT recommendation. First, model knowledge: what the model learned about the web during training — businesses with a consistent, well-documented footprint get remembered. Second, live web search: for current, local questions ChatGPT searches the web as it answers, drawing heavily on Bing’s index. That second path is why a business that fixed its presence last month can start being recommended this month — you don’t have to wait for a model retrain.

Both paths reward the same thing: verifiable consistency. An AI naming a business to a user is making a small promise. It prefers businesses whose details agree everywhere it looks.

The six signals that make you recommendable

1. Structured data on your website

Schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage) turns your site from prose into facts a machine can lift cleanly: what you do, where you serve, what you charge, how you’re rated. It’s invisible to visitors and load-bearing for machines.

2. Consistent listings everywhere

Your name, address and phone number must match exactly across Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps and your industry directories. Bing Places matters more than most owners think — ChatGPT’s live search leans on Bing’s index, and most local businesses have never claimed their Bing listing.

3. Reviews with substance

Engines read reviews as evidence. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 41% of consumers said they always read reviews — and the AI answering them reads the same reviews. A steady flow of genuine, detailed reviews (that mention the service and the suburb) beats a burst of five-star one-liners.

4. Question-shaped content

LLMs quote pages that answer questions directly. A page titled “How much does a colorbond fence cost in Mandurah?” with a plain answer in the first paragraph is quotable; a homepage that says “quality solutions, exceptional service” is not. One question per page, answer first, detail after.

5. Mentions on pages AI trusts

Third-party mentions — local news, industry associations, “best X in Y” lists, chamber-of-commerce pages — act as independent confirmation. One genuine mention on a page an engine already trusts outweighs ten directory spam entries.

6. Don’t block the crawlers

If your robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, you are invisible on purpose. Check yoursite.com/robots.txt— some website builders and CDN “bot protection” settings block AI crawlers by default.

The full DIY checklist — all 20 steps

Fair warning before you start: this is the complete job, not the highlight reel. Doing SEO and AEO properly yourself is hard — most of these steps are technical, tedious, or both, and this is exactly where most owners tap out. Budget a serious chunk of hours across your first two months (rough estimate from doing this repeatedly — it depends on how messy your current footprint is).

  1. 1Check yoursite.com/robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended.Easy15 min
  2. 2Check your CDN, firewall or website builder’s “bot protection” isn’t silently blocking AI crawlers.Moderate1–2 hrs
  3. 3Claim and 100%-complete your Google Business Profile — every field, photos, services, hours.Moderate2–3 hrs + verification wait
  4. 4Claim Bing Places (ChatGPT’s live search leans on Bing — most businesses have never done this).Moderate1–2 hrs
  5. 5Claim your Apple Maps listing.Moderate1 hr
  6. 6Hunt down every directory listing of your business across the web and log the mismatches.Hard3–6 hrs
  7. 7Fix every mismatched name, address and phone — including listings whose logins you lost years ago.Harddays of back-and-forth
  8. 8Choose your target queries: the exact questions customers ask AI about your trade and area.Moderate1–2 hrs
  9. 9Baseline test: put every target query to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity; record who gets named.Moderate2–3 hrs
  10. 10Learn schema.org basics — what LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage types are and when each applies.Harda weekend
  11. 11Write valid LocalBusiness schema for your site with correct fields (areaServed, priceRange, contact).Hard3–5 hrs
  12. 12Add Service schema for each service you offer.Hard2–4 hrs
  13. 13Add FAQPage schema that exactly matches visible content (mismatches can hurt, not help).Hard2–3 hrs
  14. 14Validate everything in Google’s Rich Results Test and fix the errors it finds.Hard1–3 hrs
  15. 15Write one question-shaped page per target query — direct answer first, depth below.Hard3–5 hrs per page
  16. 16Rewrite existing pages so facts are liftable: services, prices, service areas, hours in plain text.Hardseveral evenings
  17. 17Set up a review flow: ask every happy customer, and reply to every review — good and bad.Moderateongoing, weekly
  18. 18Earn 2–3 genuine third-party mentions: pitch local press, industry associations, supplier directories.Hardweeks of outreach
  19. 19Add a sitemap and llms.txt, and submit your site to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.Moderate1–2 hrs
  20. 20Re-test every target query monthly, track your mention rate, and investigate every drop. Forever.Moderate2–3 hrs, every month

Every step above is genuinely doable by a motivated owner — none of it is secret knowledge. But it’s a second job until it’s done, and steps 10–15 are where the learning curve bites hardest. If you’d rather skip the curve, this whole list is what our packages do for you — difficulty on your end: one onboarding call.

How long does it take?

The audit takes days; movement typically shows in 4–8 weeks. Engines with live search (ChatGPT search, Perplexity, AI Overviews) pick up changes as they re-crawl; answers that come from deeper model knowledge shift more slowly. Treat it like fitness, not surgery — compounding, not instant.

Common mistakes that keep businesses invisible

  • Blocking AI crawlers with an over-eager firewall or robots.txt.
  • Keyword-stuffing pages instead of answering questions plainly.
  • Different phone numbers on your site, GBP and directories.
  • Buying fake reviews — engines cross-check, and it poisons trust signals.
  • Doing the work once and never re-testing.

How do you know it’s working?

Ask the engines the same 5–10 questions every month and track how often you’re named — that mention rate is the number that matters. That’s exactly what the Surfaceddd trackerautomates for our clients, and if you’d rather have all of the above done for you, that’s the service.
